Nokia Music Store Becomes Ovi Music without DRM?

by nokiamania - on Mar 2nd 2010 - No Comments

According to the online media, Nokia is preparing a re-branding of its online music store Nokia Music Store. Although the Finnish company has made no official statements, obviously, the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones is going to change the Nokia Music Store into Ovi Music.

But the most interesting fact is that, according to The Symbian Blog, the new Ovi Music will offer its customers music without DRM protection. This means that you can listen to all the songs downloaded by a user with this service on any device that supports the specified format (for example, cell phones from other manufacturers, MP3 players, computers, etc.)

Such intentions are generally consistent with the recent plans of Nokia, according to which the Finnish company is going to attract consumers through improved and even free services, for example, Nokia Ovi Maps. It is unclear, though, that will happen with other music services of Nokia – Comes with Music, for creation and promotion of which the company have invested much effort and money. The exact date of launch of the new Ovi Music is not reported yet. Perhaps this will happen in the next few months, or after the release of first smartphones running Symbian ^ 3.

Nokia S40 to Get Dual SIM, Touch Screens and QWERTY-keyboard

by nokiamania - on Mar 2nd 2010 - No Comments

At the end of last year it was reported that the Finnish company Nokia is finally ready for the launch of phones with support of two SIM-cards. At the time this information was only by word of mouth, but now we already have a written confirmation.

The company is preparing affordable phones of line Nokia S40, which will have touch screens, physical QWERTY-keyboard, two slots for SIM-cards and other opportunities currently offered only in fairly expensive devices, for example, based on Symbian S60 and Maemo.

Today, S40 phones are the most widely distributed in the world. As soon as they receive an update in the form of new interfaces and services, it is not hard to believe that Nokia will continue its leadership further.

Previously, we reported that the company will expand the range of low-cost S60 devices and will reduce the number of different modifications of smartphones by half. By 2011, smart phones with the S60 platform would amount to 55% of all sales of Nokia, the share of S40 phones will be 35%, while Maemo-gadgets will remain with 10%. In the second half of the year products running Maemo 6 will be released.

Nokia E73 to Appear in U.S. in June 2010

by nokiamania - on Mar 2nd 2010 - No Comments

We have already mention the mysterious phone from the Finnish manufacturer with an appropriate name Nokia Mystic several names. It was assumed that this is a new Nokia device of C-series. Also there was a possibility that it is a successor of popular business smartphones Nokia E71 and Nokia E72 – QWERTY-device Nokia E73. But we still do not know what will be the final name of this “mysterious” new smartphone.

Currently, there is information on the web that the smartphone Nokia E73 will appear on the U.S. market in June this year, where it will be sold through the mobile operator T-Mobile. No other details are available yet: neither the exact date of occurrence, nor the likely cost of the new device, nor any of its technical characteristics.

It is not clear if this information will be confirmed in the future. However, if this happens, the emergence of Nokia E73 in the portfolio of T-Mobile USA could attract the attention of many buyers, because for now the operator sells only an entry-level Nokia devices.

In the official letter of Nokia Conversations, which was presented by The Nokia Blog, there is an allusion to the fact that the C Series smartphones are going to be presented at the next CeBIT, in early March. In general there was mentioned that Nokia is not going to comment on the rumors circulating on the network on its upcoming models, but can admit that its new devices will be presented at the CeBIT. Despite the lack of announcements at the recent Mobile World Congress, the developers saved something interesting for the next event.

Unfortunately we don’t know any details. It is believed that Nokia C5 is a quite simple candy bar smartphone based on Symbian S60 3rd Edition FP2 with 2.2-inch QVGA display, numeric keypad and optical trackpad. Nokia C6, presumably, is equipped with a touch screen, although some sources expressed the view that it is a QWERTY monoblock, known as Mystic (according to other sources it refers to E business-line). In any case, the situation will become clear very soon: CeBIT starts on March 2.

Fierce Wireless has published two video presentations of the Symbian ^ 4 operating system interface. You can see the start screen, as well as a photo-album. Let us remind you that the Nokia company had already presented the concept of Symbian ^ 4 interface, but in the form of screenshots.

And now we are able to watch the videos. The interface of the Symbian ^ 4 operating system looks like a Maemo and Android hybrid. For example, “Quit” button, located in the upper right corner, was replaced by a “backwards” (arrow), as it is done in the interface of Android software platform.

The application of viewing photos looks quite comfortable. Its main feature is the presence of small images below the main; they can be chosen for viewing. The fully completed version of the OS Symbian ^ 4 is planned for the third quarter of this year. And the first device based on it will be released, obviously, in the first half of 2011.
