Henry Tirri — New CTO for Nokia(0) Microsoft and Nokia have announced about their cooperation back in February, and it became the most discussed announcement of the year. So for now the main goal of both Nokia and Microsoft is to release Windows Phone products and to intrigue the public with them. The first wave of Nokia’s WP-powered phones will be targeting the European market, while with the second wave of products the company has plans to get more customers in the U.S. and Australia. The second wave will start only next year, while for the first wave the companies have only a few months to work on. All of these might be the reasons why Nokia decided to get a new Chief Technology Officer. Richard Green, who was dismissed from Nokia, will be replaced by Henry Tirri. The reason for firing Richard Green is assumed to be the constant disagreement with the company’s CEO Stephen Elop. Henry Tirri used to be the executive VP and member of Nokia Leadership Team. |

Nokia N9 Says Goodbye to France(0) The Nokia N9’s geography is wide — from Mexico to Australia. By saying geography I mean its availability, of course. But this doesn’t mean each country located between these two geographical regions will have a chance to get the Nokia N9, on the contrary — only chosen countries are in the list… Many countries have already left that list one after another, now it’s France’s turn. Though many users were sure France can’t be removed from it because there was an indication from the FCC ID sticker that the smartphone would come to France and we saw one of the main networks advertising accessories for it… But anyway, the country of love and beauty won’t offer this MeeGo-based smartphone to its consumers. Too bad… I think the Nokia N9 would become very popular in France if it was launched there. After all, the developers have worked hard on it, and as a result we have a gentle, confident, elegant, rugged, new and secure handset. It was even compared with the iPhone 4, and no matter you like Nokia or not, the Nokia N9 will attract you. Unfortunately, French consumers won’t have a chance to get closer look at it… |

Nokia X2 in Canada from Fido(0) One of not that popular Canadian retailer stores, Fido, is planning to enlarge its lineup of affordable devices. This time it’s going to bring a handset from Nokia — the Nokia X2, which is originally known as the Nokia X2-01. The specs of the handset are not that impressive, so don’t expect something like the Nokia N9 (read our Nokia N9 Preview to learn more about it) or the HTC Sensation (this HTC Sensation Review will help you find out more about HTC’s flagship), but still adding a QWERTY keyboard to a low-end handset is a good solution. The handset has the following specs: 2.4-inch display with a resolution of 320 × 240, S40 OS, 128 MB of ROM, 55MB of storage space, 64MB of ROM, 2.0MP camera, microSD card support, Bluetooth and 1020 mAh battery. The Nokia X2 is already available from T-Mobile in the U.S., thus the smartphone is expected to hit the stores of Fido sometime next week. The price of the handset will be something like $10 with a two-year or three-year contract, while the unlocked version is expected to be no more than $100. Earlier this year Fido introduced the LG Optimus 2X, the Samsung Galaxy Q and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro. |

Nokia 900 to be First Nokia WP Device?(0) Every Nokia fan is waiting for Nokia’s first Windows Phone device — the Nokia Sea Ray. We even have some information about it, which makes us think it exists and is being tested now. However, according to some not official info, Nokia first Windows Phone-powered device is called… the Nokia 900. A Nokia developer browsing around Bluetooth connections via Remote Device Access found a device called the Nokia 900 Windows Phone. It’s not difficult to change the phone’s name in Bluetooth settings, and everyone can rename their Chinese iPhones to HTC Titans, but is there any sense in renaming a handset to “Nokia 900 Windows Phone?” Anyway, to tell the truth, I think it’s just a trick — maybe somebody wanted to catch attention or something. After all, would Nokia write “Nokia 900 Windows phone?” I guess it was just a joke, and the one who did it made a mistake writing “p” instead of “P.” But… …but if we are going to believe it’s true, the Nokia 900 will be a high-end device, according to its name. |

Nokia N9 Pre-Orders in Helsinki(0) Nokia’s store in Helsinki is now starting to take the pre-orders for the Nokia N9! The Nokia N9 was launched back in June with a promise to get released in several countries only, including Australia, Russia and a few more. Many other countries were excluded from the list, maybe because Nokia is going to launch the first Windows Phone-powered smartphones there. The pre-orders have started only a few days ago, but Nokia’s new smartphone based on MeeGo seems to be really popular — the 64GB version of the Nokia N9 is already “pre-sold,” so those who still want to get this handset should stick with the 16GB version. Unfortunately, we have no info about the price of the smartphone, which is very strange. But we hope it will be revealed soon. The handset comes with a list of interesting features, including 3.9 inch AMOLED display with 854 × 480 pixels, 1GHz Texas Instruments OMAP3630 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 16GB or 64GB storage options, an 8MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash and 720 p video capturing capabilities. And the most amazing feature of the handset is definitely the buttonless, slim design. The most wanted color from the three color options (black, blue and pink) is black. |

Nokia 100 and Nokia 101 in India(0) The Nokia 100 and the Nokia 101 are going to be launched in India very soon — Nokia India has announced that in a few days the customers will be able to pre-order the handset from Airtel, which is a local carrier. The Nokia 100 and the Nokia 101 were announced only a month ago becoming Nokia’s cheapest handsets ever, and they’re already heading to India! It’s great, because usually it takes Nokia’s devices rather long to arrive at India. Both of the handsets are featuring the following specs: 1.8-inch TFT display, 14.9 mm thickness, 3.5mm audio jack, FM radio and 800mAh battery. They are capable of saving 500 phonebook entries and 250 SMS messages. Among the Nokia services, the handsets will sport Nokia Money and LifeTools. The only difference between the handsets is that the Nokia 101 is featuring dual-SIM cards, while the Nokia 100 is lacking this feature. These Nokia devices are going to be offered by Airtel local carrier. The customers will also get a few benefits from the carrier when purchasing the handsets in the form of 100 minutes of free talk-time with Airtel subscribers and 400 free SMS messages. The price of the Nokia 100 is going to be Rs 1399 (˜$30), and the Nokia 101 will cost Rs 1699(˜$35). |

Symbian Belle-Powered Nokia 700 and Nokia 701 Now Shipping(0) We’ve got a new tweet from Nokia mentioning that they are starting the shipments of two of their Symbian Belle handsets — the Nokia 700 and the Nokia 701. These are actually the first devices to be shipped after the big crisis of the manufacturer. These two handsets seem to come within the same series, but they are rather different in terms of hardware features. The Nokia 700 is sporting a 3.2-inch AMOLED display packed in a super slim body, while the Nokia 701 comes with a 3.5-inch IPS LCD display and larger dimensions. Here the 701 the winner is not only for the larger resolution of the display but also for the display’s quality — IPS LCD screens are usually the brightest ones so far. The main common feature of the handsets is the 1GHz processor, which allows to have quick web-browsing and increased overall performance. The speed test of the Nokia 700 and the Nokia 701 has long been available even before the announcement of their launch date, so you can check it out. The rest of the specs of the Nokia 700 include a 5MP camera, 2GB of internal memory, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC support, as for the Nokia 701, we have the following features: an 8MP, 8GB of internal memory and the same connectivity as for the Nokia 700. |

Nokia 700 Running Symbian Belle to be Launched in October(0) I guess it was in June when we first heard that Nokia was going to produce several mid-range smartphones running Symbian Belle and featuring 1GHz processors. That time the codenames and the pieces of specs lists didn’t say anything, but when the company unveiled those handsets, everyone understood those devices needed more attention. Each device from that lineup is unique in some way. For example, the Nokia 600 is the loudest smartphone, the Nokia 700 is the smallest smartphone and the Nokia 701 has the brightest screen. Now when all these handsets attracted consumers by their “special” features and the newest version of Symbian they run, I understand why everybody keeps asking about their possible launch date. Stay with us to know what we have managed to find out about this! If I say the Nokia 700 will hit the market in October, will you believe me? No? But the phone will really go on sale via Virgin Mobile in October! Moreover, the phone is a part of the Jeans for Genes campaign, which means Nokia will donate £1 to charity in your name for every Nokia 700 sold. Currently Virginia Mobile hasn’t made an official announcement, but we are sure it will. Anyway, the phone featuring a 1GHz processor, a 3.2-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display and, of course, Symbian Belle, will become popular — we have no doubt in this. |

Stephen Elop Says First WP Devices will Appear in Q4, 2011(0) Yesterday I wrote about the rumor, according to which Nokia’s first Windows Phone-powered smartphones will be launched not earlier than in Q1, 2012. But on the other hand, judging from the latest news about the Nokia Sea Ray and other smartphones running Windows Phone, the first WP-powered handsets are ready and are already being tested. Anyway, now Nokia’s Stephen Elop is saying that the first devices based on WP7 will appear by the end of 2011 and not in the beginning of 2012. Elop is in China at the moment, negotiating with Chinese carriers to find out which is the best time to bring Nokia’s new handsets to the Chinese market. In his yesterday’s interview Elop said that the first Windows Phone smartphones will “progress from country to country.” Of course, it doesn’t mean we’ll see a pile of smartphones, because the company just won’t manage to produce so many handsets. So it is realistic to expect only a couple of devices, and not more. Most likely these devices won’t be high-end smartphones, but mid-range ones. But Windows Phone OS with the improvements it brings will help those phones stand out in the mobile crowd and become popular. We can hope Nokia’s first WP phones will include the Nokia Maps service giving the users free offline navigation with traffic updates in most major countries. |
