Nokia N9 Another Hands-on Video Nokia N9 Another Hands-on Video(0)

The Nokia N9 is the most discussed smartphone nowadays, since it really sports many fresh features we can’t see in any other smartphone. The video below is a good proof of it.

You know I have heard many thoughts related to the Nokia N9 and the OS it runs (MeeGo), and it seems like those who are interested in this phone divided into two armies — one of them is impressed by this handset and think it can succeed, and the other group is sure this is a Maemo-based handset and not a MeeGo-powered one (and they say it doesn’t really feature multitasking, because getting rid of widgets doesn’t mean offering multitasking… According to some discussions, the multitasking view is equivalent to the taskbar in Windows — it just shows you the open applications and allows you to switch between them).

So, the Nokia N9 remains one of the most mysterious devices though all the features of the phone are known and Nokia is actively promoting it now.

Nokia N9 Drawing View Nokia N9 Drawing View(0)

Do you think Nokia works only on devices based on Symbian and Windows Phone 7? Of course, NO. We have talked about Nokia’s MeeGo-based smartphone for many times, but since it’s just an experimental device, some geeks are not sure it will succeed. The Meego-based Nokia N9 is the next handset from Nokia’s N line, and now we have interesting news about it.On Thursday, Stephen Elop showed us a new device. This fact made many people think this was the rumored MeeGo device. This incident became a fertile ground for discussions, and I met one of them in Maemo forums, where the Nokia N9 was introduced in a drawing view.

The picture only shows that the device will sport a 4.5-inch touchscreen — that’s all we can say when looking at the pic. But it is not surprising as when the phone got FCC approval it was clear. Anyway, the Nokia N9 is in works, and I am sure we’ll get it soon. My confidence is based on the statements made earlier, when Nokia said the smartphone will be launched this year. Before that Nokia Connect is expected — it will take place on June 21, and probably the handset will be announced at this event.

Nokia N9 to Use Touchless Gesture Technology? Nokia N9 to Use Touchless Gesture Technology?(0)

The Nokia N9 is not popular nowadays, as we don’t know much about it — Nokia keeps everything in secret. Though the smartphone has the FCC approval, we have no idea what kind of device it will be. The latest rumors refer to the new technology to be used in the Nokia N9.

There are some points that require more attention. First of all, it refers to the OS it will run, and if some people say it will be based on Windows Phone because, according to earlier statements, all upcoming Nokia high-end devices will run WP7.1 and higher versions, other group of people says it has been announced before Nokia’s cooperation with Microsoft, plus it is an N-series handset and must continue its traditions. So it will most likely run Nokia’s native platforms like Symbian, Maemo or MeeGo. This question has no answer yet.

The second feature we want to discuss is its screen size. Some sources mention it will be packed with a 3.8-inch touchscreen, and the others are sure it will sport a 4.3-inch super AMOLED touchscreen.

The third question refers to the processor, and if we take into account the fact that Nokia is in good relationships with Intel, probably the chip provider will not be Qualcomm. Finally, all geeks wonder if it will be a camera-focused handset or Nokia will pack it with weaker hardware. All these questions aside, we have another rumor related to a new touchless gestures technology.

This technology has not been seen in any other devices, perhaps only in films. This is not news for geeks who are interested in Nokia, as back in December Marko Ahtisaari spoke about the new technology that allows the users to give commands to the device without tapping on the screen. Moreover, there was a MeeGo teaser introducing faster contact with the device. It uses Neonode’s zForce optical touchscreen and the patent was applied in far 2008, so Nokia is dealing with it for years. Though the zForce technology still requires touching the screen, it is amazing since it lets the users get their hands away from the display.

Well, there is not so much to tell about this technology, but we hope in the nearest future Nokia will unveil some details related to the Nokia N9 and this new gesture-based technology.

Nokia N9 to be launched this year Nokia N9 to be launched this year(0)

This morning was quite fatal for Nokia when Stephen Elop announced they would join to Microsoft for fighting against Google. He also noted Nokia’s future smartphone will be packed with the platforms made by Microsoft, but this doesn’t mean Nokia N9 which has been announced earlier would drop MeeGo and switch to Microsoft’s OS. The Nokia N9 probably will be the first Meego-powered smartphone.

MeeGo is an open source operating system which is currently being developed by Nokia and Intel. It is going to get the all usability and features its predecessor owns. It also will deliver a much better variety of apps, than the Maemo does, thanks to the introduction of Nokia’s Qt framework.

Qt framework will allow developers to offer apps that can be ported between Symbian^3 and MeeGo. So we can say all those apps that are being created for the Nokia N8 and Nokia C7 will be compatible with the Nokia n9 too.

During the press release was held today morning Stephen Elop announced their first MeeGo smartphone will be launched at some point this year. And we can only say it’ll run MeeGo, nothing else we can inform now.

Honestly, I have though that Nokia will still keep MeeGo, i.e. it wouldn’t drop Symbian and MeeGo simultaneously and switch to Windows Phone 7. Though I guess we have to wait for a long time until we’ll see first Nokia smartphones powered with Microsoft’s OS.

Nokia N9 features Nokia N9 features(0)

From the beginning of this year we all have been waiting for Nokia’s answer to the competition where Android and Apple have made. Nokia announced many times their future devices will be equipped with MeeGo platform which make a good competition to aforementioned OSs. But until today we have heard only about one device that runs Linux based operating system, the Nokia N9. For this deal Nokia used its own Linux distribution called Maemo, and Intel had got one called Moblin. But for better results at MWC 2010 both companies announced these two projects would be merged, and it happened.

So as there is just one device packed with MeeGo, the folks over NokiaPort.de decided to take a look at MeeGo bug reports, patch information, and source code files to find out what is under the attractive housing of the Nokia N9. Below is the specs list they have found.

Nokia N9 specs list

  • Intel 1.6 GHz CPU
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 200 MHz GPU with 512 MB of RAM
  • 480 x 854 pixel resolution screen
  • HDMI out
  • Broadcom BCM4751 GPS chip
  • NPX Semiconductor PN544 NFC Controller
  • Infineon XMM 6260 3G modem (21 Mbps HSPA+ capable)
  • Texas Instruments WiLink 6.0 WL1271 chip (802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth).

Looking at this list we can assume the features are a bit of an understatement and we wonder whether Nokia will release the first Intel based smartphone. We think so because Nokia has always been very conservative when it comes to hardware, but today’s Nokia is not the company we knew several years ago, and probably it’s time to change the strategy.

MeeGo 1.1 Brings Dual Booting to Nokia N900 MeeGo 1.1 Brings Dual Booting to Nokia N900(0)

Yesterday MeeGo OS was updated to the 1.1 version. It has an interesting feature called U-Boot and it is available for N900.

This is a new feature supporting dual booting between MeeGo and Maemo. Though the update is available from yesterday, but you can already watch the video testing its capabilities. It shows the dual booting process between the two operating systems on the sample of Nokia N900.

It’s a complex process that requires some kernel editing and microSD card, but as it is already done, it should be straightforward. You have just to install a few packages, write the MeeGo file system images to a microSD card and start up the phone.

Check out the video below to find out how easy it’s done.

Nokia N900 Based On Android 2.2? Nokia N900 Based On Android 2.2?(0)

One of the most popular devices from Nokia- Nokia N900 was rumored to be the first device running Maemo operating system and at the end it turned out to be just fake news. And then the actual device appeared based on Android 2.1 OS, while this not the all. As we all know Android 2.1 operating system is not giving you a chance to use all of the pleasure of being an Android user.

That’s the main reason why now the operating system of the device is going to be updated to the version of Android 2.2 Froyo. This means that the users will be able to use all of the possible cellular data.

Does this mean that we should forget about Maemo operating system. Well, not necessarily, as we all know that it might be coming as a competitor of the first, but will be a strong enough competitor?

Nokia To Revise Cooperation Conditions with Developers Nokia To Revise Cooperation Conditions with Developers(0)

Nokia has announced a number of sufficiently strong changes in the conditions of cooperation with the third party developers. They must once again draw the attention of the creators of software to support the Finnish company platforms.

In particular, now to distribute their applications via Ovi Store can not be done only by companies but also by the individuals. Registration application in the directory will be free, but the material “load” for the developers will have an entry fee of 50 Euros.

In addition, Nokia has published a SDK for standard Qt. The utilities, based by the latter are compatible with both Symbian, and Maemo. Theoretically, this innovation should be of interest to software developers. In addition, from now on they will be able to deploy new applications in Ovi Store.

The current state of affairs of Nokia’s support from the developers especially for the OS is unenviable. Will the announcement make any changes to attract a sufficient number of partners?

Android Froyo Running on Nokia N900 Android Froyo Running on Nokia N900(0)

Can you imagine Nokia N900 running Android Froyo? Isn’t this device running on Maemo OS? Yes, it surely is. But for now some of the hackers got a chance to shift the operating system of Nokia device even before some of the real googlephones could get it. Just remember the Android 2.1 running on the device.

As it must be expected the integration is not that impressive. There are lots of features which are not working normally. The list includes the network signal, IP settings for the Wi-Fi connection, problems with MicroSD cards.

Well, let’s say that all of this is expected and typical for the non-Android device! Just enjoy the 6 minute video, which will demonstrate all of the pros and the cons of the test.

New Members Joined MeeGo Project New Members Joined MeeGo Project(0)

MeeGo , the unified mobile platform of Intel Moblin and Nokia Maemo, attracted attention of an imposing number of new industry players: from equipment vendors and suppliers of games to software developers and providers of embedded solutions.

In general, it is not clear yet whether MeeGo should be positioned as a competitor of Google Android or other OS, but it makes sense to simply accept this system as one of the alternatives for strengthening the market presence of project participants.

The nonprofit Linux Foundation, which oversees the project, has announced the following list of companies which are going to join MeeGo: Acer, Amino, Asianux, ASUS, BMW Group, Collabora, CS2C, DeviceVM, EA Mobile, Gameloft, Hancom, Linpus, Maemo Community Council, Mandriva, Metasys, Miracle, MontaVista Software, Novell, PixArt, Red Flag, ST-Ericsson, Tencent, TurboLinux, VietSoftware, Wind River, WTEC and Xandros.

Reminder: MeeGo, which was announced MWC 2010 Event in February, is intended for working on a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, netbooks, TV sets, automotive systems and so on. It will allow to create applications that will work on several types of devices without simultaneous adaptation. Nokia Ovi Store will be the store to introduce MeeGo-applications. The new platform will co-exist together with Symbian, but it is made for installation in more expensive gadgets, such as Nokia N900.
