Nokia N8 Getting Camera Update

by Ani - on Aug 23rd 2011 - No Comments

The Nokia N8 owners are feeling really lucky lately. First, the smartphone received the famous Symbian Anna update that fixed many bugs, and then the next Symbian Belle update was leaked. And now we have good news again – the Nokia N8 is receiving a camera update!

The update includes some UI and video capturing improvements and faster access to camera controls. You will now be able to shoot smoother videos at 30fps. You can download the update from Betalabs and learn more about it from Nokia Conversations.

The Nokia N8 has a 3.5-inch (360 x 640 pixels) AMOLED capacitive touchscreen showing 16M colors, a 680 MHz ARM 11 processor and Broadcom BCM2727 GPU. It also has 16 GB storage and a microSD card slot, so its memory can be expanded up to 32GB. The smartphone also has 256MB RAM, 512MB ROM and a standard Li-Ion 1200 mAh battery.

However, the Nokia N8 is most famous for its powerful 12MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, Xenon flash. It can take huge 4000×3000 pics with great quality. And as for videos, it was able to record 720p videos at 25fps till now, and with the update it’ll start recording at 30fps.

Stunning Short Video Shot on Nokia N8

by Ani - on Jun 30th 2011 - No Comments

I stumbled upon this video when I was reading some tech news on the web. I watched it and was really surprised to learn that this little Love Story is shot by a phone camera… And not a simple phone, but the Nokia N8!

We’ve heard a lot about the Nokia N8 and its powerful 12MP camera, and we’ve seen the photos shot with the N8 by aerial photographer Jason Hawkes that once again prove the camera with its Zeiss optics is really great. But I personally have never seen any great, really great videos shot with it. And now, here it is — a great video…

This video called “Splitscreen: A Love Story” is the winner of the Nokia Shorts competition 2011. Have a look:

The Nokia N8 has a 3.5-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen (360 x 640 pixels) that shows 16M colors and supports the multi-touch input method, 680 MHz ARM 11 processor, Broadcom BCM2727 GPU, 256MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 16 GB storage and a microSD card slot. As for the battery, it’s a Li-Ion 1200 mAh that provides up to 12 h (2G) (up to 5 h 50 min (3G)) of talk-time, up to 390 h (2G) (up to 400 h (3G)) of stand-by time and up to 50 hours of music play.

Besides, the Nokia N8 runs the updated Symbian Anna, has some special apps developed for it and some other great features that were unknown for many of us.

Dinning Reveals Secrets of Nokia N9 Camera

by Ani - on Jun 28th 2011 - No Comments

The Nokia N9 features an 8MP camera, and some people think it’s not as cool as the N8’s 12MP one. If you’re one of those who think so, check out the interview with Damian Dinning — Nokia Senior Manager for Solutions Planning.

Dinning played an important role in developing the cameras of a number of Nokia devices including the N95, N86 8MP and the famous Nokia N8. Now in his recent interview he spoke about the Nokia N9’s camera and revealed some of its secrets…

First of all, he mentioned that the camera of the Nokia N9 isn’t exactly 8MP – it actually has 8.7 million active pixels, and its unorthodox aspect ratio is 1.45:1, so it is optimized to shoot in 4:3 and 16:9 modes, sacrificing only 1.6 megapixels instead of 3 (as in case of the Nokia N8) for the widescreen mode. The pic below will explain how this works:

The next thing about the Nokia N9 camera worth mentioning is that it’s equipped with great Carl-Zeiss lens with the largest aperture (f/2.2) ever created for a smartphone, which makes them 75 percent brighter than the lens of the Nokia N8. This allows the Nokia N9 to shoot better-quality images in low light (since more light reaches the sensor).

The flash unit of the Nokia N9 also deserves some attention. It’s not xenon, of course, but it’s a LED flash 20 percent more powerful than the flash units of other, even the most powerful smartphones.

More info about the Nokia N9′s camera, Damian Dinning’s words about it and some photos made by the N8 and N9 (if you wish to compare them) can be found on Nokia Conversations.

Nokia N8 vs. Motorola Atrix 4G

by Argam - on May 18th 2011 - 1 Comment

The Nokia N8 is famous for its powerful 12MP camera, and the Motorola Atrix 4G is known for its processor and the laptop dock that turns the smartphone into a computer. What do these two smartphones have in common? Nothing, as it may seem at the first sight. However, some geeks decided to compare the Nokia N8’s 680MHz processor and the Motorola Atrix’s dual-core 1GHz processor.

Let’s see what results they managed to get…

If you think that the video below can’t say anything new or interesting, you’re wrong, since not everything in a good processor depends on the number of MHz. The video clearly shows the advantages and the shortcomings of both handsets.

I can note a couple of features that are in favor of the Nokia N8: The gallery is smoother in the Nokia N8, which is Symbian^3’s advantage in comparison with other operating systems, especially with Android. Besides, the image rotation in the Nokia N8 is much faster than in the Motorola Atrix 4G.

Anyway, watch this video yourself and discover the advantages of the seemingly weaker processor of the Nokia N8.

Nokia N8 vs Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc (Camera Comparison)

by Argam - on May 10th 2011 - 1 Comment

When Nokia launched the N8 that has the most powerful camera at the moment, I thought other manufacturers would release such handsets one after another. But it didn’t happen! Moreover, besides the Nokia N8 we can’t find any other smartphone with a 12MP camera. The most powerful one we can see is 8MP only.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc had been assumed to be a worthy competitor to the Nokia N8. Now when both devices are available, we can easily compare them. So I decided to search the Internet and find something interesting on this topic. As the Bible says “Seek, and ye shall find!” So I found it — an interesting camera test that compares these two smartphones :)

First, I would like to express my thanks to the author of the test, as I got all the answers to my questions. And since I’m a Nokia fan (especially a Nokia N8 fan), I am pleased with the results the test showed.

Test 1: Indoors, natural light

For the results of this test to be true, the author didn’t use any flash or artificial lights. He made some pictures, cropped and zoomed them.

Here I have to say the difference between 8MP and 12MP is obvious, as Nokia N8’s picture (which is from the left) provides more details, though when it comes to smoothing, the Xperia Arc’s pic looks better.

Test 2: Indoor, very low light, no flash

With the help of this test we can find out which sensor is more sensitive. Тhough N8’s sensor is larger, the Xperia Arc’s back-illuminated EXMOR R sensor sounds more attractive. The right picture is made by the Xperia Arc, and at the first sight it appears lighter to the eye, but if you have a closer look, it becomes clear the image is full of noise and some unpleasant artificial colorations.

Test 3: Low light, flash allowed, party/club shot

I think these photos don’t even need comments. I will just say the thing is that the Arc is equipped with a LED-flash, and it doesn’t manage to react fast enough. The Nokia N8’s Xenon flash is quite nice.

Test 4: Outdoors, bright sunlight

This test will help to find out how our two cameras behave in bright sunlight. As you can see from the picture taken by the Nokia N8 (left), its Neutral Density filter helps the camera not to overload the sensor. And you can’t say the same about the Xperia’s camera…

Test 5: Outdoors, perfect light, close-up subject

Macro pictures are the most interesting and discussed ones, I guess, and many people compare their handsets’ cameras by comparing the macro images made by them. The author of the test also decided to use macro to compare the Nokia N8 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. He took some pics with both, and zoomed them.

As you can see, the Arc (right) feels quite well in this area, but the bright areas are a bit overblown; perhaps it’s because of the 8MP resolution.

However, we must confirm the Sony Ericsson Xpera Arc is very attractive with its 8MP camera, but there still is much to do. I hope someday we’ll see a worthy handset able to compete with the Nokia N8, but as it doesn’t exist yet, I will say without any doubt that THE NOKIA N8 HAS THE BEST CAMERA!

Photos of Britain Taken with Nokia N8

by Ani - on Mar 29th 2011 - No Comments

If you’re fond of photography, perhaps you have heard about aerial photographer Jason Hawkes who has taken pictures around the whole world and has dozens of books published. Several days ago he organized helicopter flights over Britain to take some photos. But he didn’t take his professional camera with him for those flights. Instead he took a… Nokia N8 smartphone!

“My usual camera bag is pretty huge, and really heavy. So for the past few weeks I’ve swapped it for a Nokia N8. Is it possible to shoot aerial views all over the UK on a cameraphone?” Hawkes wrote in his blog.

Hawkes and his team had flights over London, Midlands, North England, East Anglia, Scotland and many other locations, and later the photographer wrote on his blog that “Results on the N8 were amazing.”

Here are some of the photos taken by Jason Hawkes with the Nokia N8:

It’s really hard to believe these pictures were taken with a 12MP smartphone camera! But looks like they don’t yield even to photos taken with a half-professional or even professional camera, if you’re skilled enough in photography, of course. It’s even possible to make panoramic shots with this smartphone, if you install the Panorama app, which is free and can be found on Ovi Store.

There’s also an interesting video on Hawkes’ blog you might want to have a look at:

I think the photos by Hawkes can inspire many of you to take your own pictures with your Nokia N8. If you do so, don’t hesitate to post them here!

Nokia N8 underwater shooting video

by Argam - on Feb 7th 2011 - No Comments

The Nokia N8 was launched last year but it’ll surprise us with its camera’s abilities for a long time. I am not going to list the advantages of 12MP camera, but if you like to visit exotic locations and want to capture some video footage during your swimming in the deep blue ocean, the Nokia N8 can be very useful for this deal. One guy has done it with this handset, and look what happened.

According to an article over on Daily Mobile, a guy who was on vacation in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh decided to record a short film about underwater life and used for it its Symbian^3 powered Nokia N8 and $2 zip lock splash bag.

The video lasts more than a minute so it wouldn’t take you too long to check out the video below and enjoy the beauty of a crystal clear sea and a brightly colored fish.

N8 Underwater from maxhd on Vimeo.

Agree, that looks pretty cool, and I guess many users decided to use their Nokia N8 for underwater shooting too.

The Nokia N8 surprises with its 12MP camera, but the phone boasts other awesome features too, for example Symbian^3 platform, 680MHz processor, 16GB memory card, 512MB ROM. It also supports 3G HSDPA network providing 10.2 Mbps internet speed. It sports 1200mAh standard battery providing up to 3.5 hours of talk time and 400hours of stand-by mode in 3G network.

Furthermore, the phone’s price was cut to €299 which means it has become available for more people.

The N8 Moves into Cover Shots With Glorious Results

by L.K. - on Dec 20th 2010 - No Comments

The weapon of the Nokia N8 is its awesome 12MP camera and I am sure it already has won the hearts of many Nokia freaks.  Hands down!

The Nokia N8 is “handy” tool for professional shooting, and the first experiment is PiX magazine’s December cover, which was shot entirely with the Nokia N8.   The first experiment proved a great success!

Sure in the photo studio you set up lighting, the subject and there are other photography tricks  to get the right exposure but apparently a 12 mg camera has done its best!

Amazon always offers gadgets with the lowest prices, so they always benefit from deals. At this time a recent coupon at Nokia USA’s online shop comes with a nice deal offering the Nokia N8 for only $399. This is the lowest price yet, because the phone was available for about $600.

The Nokia N8 is one of the company’s latest smartphones running Symbian^3, but it is not the main advantage of this phone, as the handset is equipped with 12MP camera. That’s really a good deal, because there is no smartphone to be compared with this one nowadays. The device features a 3.5 inch touchscreen that is good enough with several major advances introduced by the platform.

Nokia N8 vs. Google Nexus S

by Sona - on Dec 15th 2010 - No Comments

Of course, Google Nexus S sports complete features and it is one of the latest smartphones making a big fuss in the mobile world, but Nokia has its own flagship ready to fight against it, Nokia N8. So we decided to compare these ones and find out whether it could make a real competition to our favorite phone.

Probably you’ll agree with me the main advantage of the Nokia N8 is its 12MP camera, and I guess there are no one smartphone to be a competitor to it. The Google Nexus S can’t do it neither, as it boasts only 5MP camera. And the difference between the cameras is huge, so the photos will be quite different in quality.

The Nokia N8 has got standard pre-installed Ovi Maps offering turn-by-turn navigation, which is more batter than Google Maps app found on the Google Nexus S.

The both handsets offer capacitive screens, though the Google Nexus S sports 4 inch touchscreen and is a little bit sharper, while the N8 is equipped with a 3.5 inch display with lower sharpness.

The Google Nexus S is packed with 1500mAH battery which provides up to 7 hours of talk time in 3G and up to 428 hours of stand-by mode, while the Nokia N8 comes with 1200mAH battery providing up to 5.50 hours of talk time and up to 400 hours of stand-by mode in 3G. But as we know Android phones are power hungry handsets, and the abovementioned data don’t mean anything.

The Nokia’s one offers an HDMI port, USB on the go, and the Google’s smartphone is packed with NFC chip. So different users will give their preference to different phones related with the fact what kind of predilections they have got.

The Nokia N8 runs Symbian^3, and the Google Nexus S runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Both platforms are the latest versions of the OSs, and Android is easy to use, but if you ask Nokia users which platform they like, be sure , the answer will be “Symbian”. And if you don’t forget the Nokia users are the most in the world.

What do you think can the Google Nexus S make a competition to the Nokia N8?
