2,000 Nokia Patents Transferred to Canadian Mosaid

by Argam - on Sep 2nd 2011 - No Comments

During this crisis period Nokia is required to get rid of some of its popular units. One of them is Core Licensing. So now the 2,000 patents that used to be the property of Nokia are moved to Canada-based Mosaid, which acquired Core Licensing. These patents are mainly dealing with mobile and wireless technologies.

Core Licensing is going to function as a unit of Mosaid. Mosaid in its turn is not going to pay Nokia for the use of the patents, still in case of patent lawsuits and settlements from patent infringers, the company should be willing to transfer 2/3 of income to Nokia and Microsoft. And this is a rather tricky solution, as Mosaid used to have winning lawsuits against Dell, HTC, Sony Ericsson, RIM and a large list of other major manufacturers. Except this Mosaid is planning to get more revenue from the company, than in its latest 30+ years of functionality.

But there’s another interesting news concerning Mosaid itself. Wi-Lan, which is another Canadian patent licensing company  is planning to acquire Mosaid. If this deal ends up successfully, Coral Licensing is going to be transferred to another interested party.

Nokia Loses Patent Ruling for Two Smartphones

by Ani - on Jun 21st 2011 - No Comments

Not so long ago Nokia won a patent war against Apple and, according to some analysts, will get €420 million ($608 million) from it. However, after four years of legal struggles, Nokia didn’t manage to win in a patent war against a company called IPCom.

We wrote about this case earlier, and now some new details are available.

The patent refers to some 3G technologies, and though Nokia isn’t creating anything using these technologies that infringe upon IPCom’s patent, the U.K. High Court ruled that there are two devices for which Nokia either has to pay royalties (amount still unknown) to the patent’s holder or stop selling those phones.

“We are pleased that the U.K. High Court declared that Nokia’s current products do not infringe the patent,” said Nokia. “This means that we can continue selling those products, now with legal certainty.”

As for those two smartphones that actually do violate IPCom’s patent, Nokia says they’re not selling them any longer.

IPCom wasn’t really happy with Nokia’s response to the court’s decision.

“Nokia is clearly misleading the public on what the court ruled today,” said Bernhard Frohwitter, IPCom managing director. “IPCom is ready to enforce the U.K. ruling.”

Nokia Loses Patent War With IPCom

by Argam - on Jun 17th 2011 - No Comments

While some companies such as HTC are winning in patent wars against the leading competitors, Nokia is giving up its positions to the others. This time — to Germany-based IPCom. The trial was taking place in the UK, as it was reported by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

“As far as we know, this is the first time that an essential telecoms 3G patent was ever upheld and judged infringed in the U.K.,” said Berhard Frohwitter, IPCom Managing Director.

As it’s quite obvious Nokia is not satisfied with the ruling stating that the ruling was a little misleading. The situation was created around the patent that “allows mobile telephony networks to assign priorities to users.”

The claim of the German company was leading to the idea of banning the sales of certain Nokia devices in the territory of the UK. But the representatives of Nokia state that this is not going to take place, and the sales of the devices will be legally continued. And except that Nokia doesn’t see the situation as a final defeat. The representatives claim that they are planning to fight back some time soon.

For the moment according to the vice-president of Nokia, Paul Melin the total number of patents illegally used by Apple make the 37 patents.

Nokia vs. Apple: Patent Wars Continue

by nokiamania - on May 17th 2010 - No Comments

The leader of the mobile phone market, the Finnish Nokia has again brought an action against Apple, accusing the Californian company in infringing five Nokia patents in the Apple iPhone and iPad 3G. The suit was filed to  the federal district court of the western district of Wisconsin.

Controversial technologies concern improvements related to the voice and data transmission in case of wireless connection, in particular, the use of positional information in applications and innovations in antenna configuration, which improves the performance and saves space, allowing us to create more compact cases for the device. The company reports that Nokia was the first to develop a set of key technologies for mobile devices. We made this step to protect the results of our innovative development and to put an end to the illegal use of Nokia advanced technologies.

Over the past 20 years, the Finnish company has invested about 40 billion euros for research and development of wireless technologies.

Let us remind that the sharing lawsuits between the two companies started last October, when the Finnish company accused Apple of violating 10 of its patents on data transmission in GSM, UMTS and WLAN. In December of the last year Apple, in its turn, accused the Finnish company of violating 13 of its patents and filed a claim to the American international trade Commission, informing about the necessity to ban sales of Nokia phones in the territory of the U.S.

Nokia has responded to this with a statement in January of 2010, indicating to the violation of its copyrights in smartphones and laptops of the Californian company. According to some experts, the lawsuit between the two companies may last for 2.5 years.
