Recent financial has revealed that Nokia reported a loss of €150 million despite making a net sale of €5.9 billion in first quarter of 2013. This report for the first quarter in 2013 of Nokia revealed that the scenario for Finnish mobile manufacturing giant is not so rosy. Report said that Lumia handset sales have gone up by 27% compared to the last quarter to 5.6 million units in Q1 2013.

Geographically, Nokia did quite well in Europe and in the Asia-Pacific region with net sales of €895 million and €724 million, respectively. This mobile making major shipped 11.8 million mobile devices in Europe while for Asia-pacific this tally stands at 23.1 million – is almost twice the tally in Europe. The report also shows an overall device volume shipments of 55.8 million units (smartphones and feature phones) which drop by almost 30% than what the company managed in fourth quarter in 2012.

According to data released by a market research firm in November 2012, Samsung and Apple dominated smartphone market. In the third quarter, Samsung had become the manufacturer with largest mobile handset market with 22.9 percent of the overall market share. On the other hand, the same report said that Nokia had slipped to No. 2 slot with only 19.2% global share, down from 23.9% a year ago.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop was quoted as commenting on this report, “At the highest level, we are pleased that Nokia Group achieved underlying operating profitability for the third quarter in a row. While operating in a highly competitive environment, Nokia is executing our strategy with urgency and managing our costs very well. We have areas where we are making progress, and areas where we are further increasing the focus. For example, people are responding positively to the Lumia portfolio, and our volumes are increasing quarter over quarter. Nokia Siemens Networks delivered another strong quarter and contributed to an overall improvement in Nokia Group’s cash position. Our Mobile Phones business faces a difficult competitive environment, and we are taking tactical actions and bringing new innovation to market to address our challenges.” However, this Finnish company is optimistic enough that it will see much brighter picture at the end of second quarter.
