Nokia #1 in Top Five Mobile Phone Vendors Q1 2011

by Ani - on May 3rd 2011 - No Comments

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has conducted a research and discovered that a 19.8 percent growth was registered in the worldwide mobile phone market in the first quarter of 2011.

According to IDC’s data, 371.8 million units were shipped by mobile phone vendors in Q1 2011, while only 310.5 million of them were sold in the same first quarter of 2010. There was a significant smartphone growth in Asia, Middle East, Africa and Latin America, and both smartphone and feature phone manufacturers had their role in the market growth.

“Several notable vendors, including feature phone makers, outpaced the overall market, which contributed to share losses of some top suppliers,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker.

“The growth of companies outside the top 5 vendors – vendors in the ‘Others’ category, such as Micromax, TCL-Alcatel, Huawei, and Research In Motion – shows that the overall market is still very much ripe for share gains,” he added.

Here is the list of Top Five Mobile Vendors Q1 2011, according to IDC:

  1. Nokia
  2. Samsung
  3. LG Electronics
  4. Apple
  5. ZTE

Nokia, which, according to IDC, is the leading mobile phone vendor, had 108.5 million shipments (0.6 percent more than in the last year’s first quarter) in Q1 2011 and gets 29.2 percent of the market. Samsung, which is the second in the list, had 70.0 million (8.9 percent more than last year) shipments and got the 18.8 percent of the market. LG Electronics had 24.5 million shipments (9.6 percent less than in 2010) and 6.6 percent of the market.

Apple registered a great progress and shipped 18.7 million devices (114.9 percent more than in 2010), gaining 5 percent of the market. And ZTE had 15.1 shipments (45.2 percent more than in Q1 2010) and gained the 4.1 percent of the market. As for the other phone vendors that were not included in the list of top 5, 135 million phones were sold by them in the first quarter of 2011, which is 46.4 percent more than last year, so now the 36.3 percent of the mobile phone market belongs to them.

How to Update to Nokia Pure Font

by Ani - on Mar 29th 2011 - No Comments

Earlier we posted information about Nokia Pure—a set of new Nokia fonts. The typeface looks really cool and stylish; it got much attention, and I am sure many people now wish to have it installed on their Nokia smartphones. So here is an easy way to do it.

First of all, download the needed files for your smartphone (for Symbian^3-based smartphones like Nokia E7, N8 or C7 you can use this source, and for the S60V3 and S60v5 smartphones (Nokia N97 mini, 5800, E72 and others) this one would do; here is one more source you might be interested in).

Just remember that these are not the official implementations of Nokia Pure, so unexpected bugs can occur. Some people have already noticed that several symbols are not recognized with these fonts installed, and some applications don’t work properly as well. But there is no need to worry; if you install the fonts and understand you don’t like or you don’t want them, you can remove them easily.

After downloading the files with the fonts, unzip them and put them into your smartphone’s memory card or mass memory (for Nokia E7). And here is a quick tutorial of what you should do next:

“[For Symbian^3 phones only, for other Symbian devices (V5,V3) use FontRouter]
Get Qt 4.7.2 binaries: Core, Webkit, Mobility
1. Make sure you have a memory card in your Symbian^3 device, use mass memory for the E7.
2. Then get any True type font you wish (should be of extension .ttf ). For example, Nokia Pure.ttf
3. Now navigate to the Resource folder in memory card’s Root (for example, if M: is memory card, navigate to M:/Resource, if it’s not there, create one)
4. Now create a Folder called Fonts in M:/Resource (So the folder path should be M:/Resource/Fonts)
5. Now this is the most important step:
Make four copies of the font you have and rename the same font to the corresponding filenames (for example, if you have Helvetica(01).ttf, rename it to nosnr60.ttf, like wise rename others to respective filenames given below)
nosnr60.ttf
nssb60.ttf
nstsb60.ttf
S60ZDIGI.ttf
6. After you have renamed to the above filenames, Copy them to the Fonts folder In M:/Resource/Fonts.
Now reboot the phone and enjoy your new fonts!”

This way of installing the new Nokia Pure fonts is very easy and fast—it’s only a matter of several minutes. If there is something you didn’t understand, you can always ask us. Or have a look at this tutorial. And this video can also be useful for you:

Futuristic Nokia E97 Envelope Concept Phone

by L.K. - on Nov 1st 2010 - No Comments

When I look at the E97 Envelop concept phone from Nokia, I got convinced that a man’s imagination has no boundaries.
The Nokia E97 Envelop is definitely designed to impress. How nice it is to see a new Nokia concept phone, even if the mobile phone is  not materialized by the company itself, but thanks to all the talented people it become possible to imagine what a Nokia phone in the future might look like.

Maybe the new Nokia phone will never look as attractive as this concept, but in any case, it’s great to see how this concept might look like a mobile phone in our hands!
Nokia E97 Envelop is incredibly stylish concept phone. The new concept  probably is the most ingenious design interpretation I’ve ever seen. The futuristic design of Nokia E97 Envelop looks as if the Smartphone has arrived from another planet, and it would be very interesting to see how the phone looks like in a real life.
With dark and smoothed edges, the Nokia E97 has a unique liquid crystal screen that comes out of the keyboard and can be removed from the cell, you simply pull the screen like a paper envelope, and the unplugged display can be used as a storage device, a flash drive for example. The smartphone features a AZERTY keyboard.

Plus, the phone works with two SIM cards (sim) simultaneously.

The concept of this mobile with a  pull-out LED display that comes out of a keyboard, and that can be removed from the phone itself was developed by a young student named Fabien Fabien Nauroy (France) and he called this phone E97 Envelop.

Nokia’s Next Step: Ovi Maps on Android and WinMo-Smartphones

by nokiamania - on Feb 25th 2010 - No Comments

Nokia Ovi Maps will run on smartphones working on Android and Windows Mobile in the nearest future. It became known from an interview with Greig Williams, the General Director of Nokia Alps and South East Europe, who said that it would be the next step of the company.
Now it is difficult to say when the owners of Android and WinMo-smartphones will be able to use the Nokia Ovi Maps service, but now we have the words of the official representative of Nokia that this is possible.

Of course, it should be noted that such actions by Nokia seem strange, because the free use of Ovi Maps encourages customers to buy smartphones of its production. It is interesting to see how the Finns will realize this idea.
Let us remind you that the new version of Ovi Maps was introduced last month. The main advantage of the service is its total free use.

The executive vice president and general manager of Nokia Markets, Anssi Vanjoki, did the thing that is unusual for a company like Nokia, the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones. In an interview with All About Symbian and Mobile Industry Review, he confessed to a mistake with the Nokia N97.
Vanjoki confirmed that the problems with the Nokia N97 software were really significant, and that the complaints of users in this regard are well founded. He also added that with the release of the 21 firmware version, the problem has been solved.

Vanjoki also said that the company “learned from its mistakes” and would take into account the software bugs in the Symbian ^ 3 operating system, and devices that it will be based on.
Despite the negative customer experience, N97 has become one of the most popular smartphones of Nokia. The sales of the device are fully justified. Despite the fact that the company was the last to enter the mass market of smartphones with touch screen, its sales in this segment of the outcome in 2009 grew by 42 times.

Intel and Nokia May Develop a New Processor

by nokiamania - on Feb 19th 2010 - No Comments

Intel and Nokia are possibly developing a new microprocessor for mobile devices.
Let us remind you that at concluded yesterday Mobile World Congress 2010, Intel and Nokia unveiled a new operating system MeeGo for smartphones, laptops, tablet PCs, netbooks and other gadgets. It is based on components of the Moblin platform and Maemo.

The representatives of Intel and Nokia have announced MeeGo mobile platform (15 February, Barcelona, Spain).
After the MeeGo announcement there are rumors that the collaboration between Intel and Nokia in the mobile sphere will not limit with only one operating system. According to unofficial data, the companies are working on a new “system on a chip” with the Penwell code name.
The basis for a new chip will serve the Atom architecture, but it will be applied in netbooks and communicators. Given this, we can assume that Penwell will support various means of wireless communication and will have little power.
Intel and Nokia did not give any comments.
