Nokia Lumia 900 to be Launched at CES 2012

by Argam - on Jan 9th 2012 - No Comments

The expectation of getting the first Windows Phone in the US during Consumer Electronics Show is finally justified. According to a rather reliable source (New York Times!), the Nokia Lumia 900 will be launched during the CES 2012 event. This much anticipated event will take place on January 9 (today) in Las Vegas.

The design of the handset is still not leaked. The only description the source gives is “sleek” and “metallic.” Well, if the term “sleek” is pretty reasonable, the “metallic” leaves a space for various speculations. It might be connected with a glossy cover or a brand new interesting color option.

The name of the device as the Lumia 900 is also confirmed by the source. The carrier of the handset in the US will be AT&T. Still so far there’s no affirmation the device will support 4G LTE connectivity.

Earlier rumors suggest that the device sport a large 4.3 inch display and have a design similar to that of the Nokia Lumia 800. The only confirmed specification is the WP OS, though we are not sure whether it will be Mango or Tango series.

Nokia Lumia 710 Design Review

by Argam - on Nov 24th 2011 - 1 Comment

The Nokia Lumia 710 is one of Nokia’s two available Windows Phone Mango handsets. While cheaper in price, the handset does win the Nokia Lumia 800 in terms of design. The handset comes in candy bar form factor with a 3.7-inch display covered with Gorilla Glass technology. Here it kind of resembles the Nokia 603.

The handset is available only in two color options, black and white. But this doesn’t mean you need to get additional cases to make your device colorful; the manufacturer gives you a list of interesting back cover options, including black, white, fuchsia, cyan and yellow. And when purchasing the handset you get a chance to choose one more color option in the form of the cover.

WP Mango means the handset comes with typical Windows Phone screen tiles. To make them more matching with the handsets, Nokia and Microsoft decided to offer customizable colors for the tiles. WP Mango OS saves the situation with the small dimension of the display allowing to have large icons and larger texts.

The display of the handset is protected with ClearBlack technology, accordingly the users will not have any trouble while reading texts under direct sunlight. The LCD type of display might not be as great as the AMOLED one, which comes with the Nokia Lumia 800, but trust me, the difference is not that significant.

Below the display we have the WP typical buttons, Back and Search. The buttons lay on the slim curved plastic bubble. Working with the design the manufacturer did a great job, while the same cannot be said about the responsiveness: some of the customers claim this design doesn’t allow them to finger where to push not getting to the button next to it.

The Nokia Lumia 710 is basically made of plastic. Even the battery cover is made of plastic, in contrast to the latest models, such as the Nokia 701. It’s good the manufacturer decided to avoid matte cover, as in the case of white and black options the overall elegance of the handsets could be lost. As for the rest of color options I think it would actually make sense.

The plastic makes the handset lighter. It weighs only 125.5 g, which is in average 40 grams less than the handsets of the same form factor. But we should consider it also makes the handset less shock-resistant. Still one material usage allows avoiding the use of expensive cases, which are designed to protect each material of the handset separately.

On the upper part of the front we can find the loudspeaker and sensors. If this speaker is placed conveniently, then the same doesn’t go for the back loudspeaker. It turns out to be way too large, which means while listening to music or watching videos, at least part of the speaker is being covered either with the hand or with any other surface. Still in terms of design, this large speaker looks amazingly attractive.

The handset comes with only a rear camera placed on the back. This doesn’t have to deal with Nokia itself, but rather with the impossibility of Windows Phone OS to support front-facing cameras. As for the rear camera, we have pretty large lens, coming with a round-edged design, which ideally fits into the overall style solution of the handset.

The 3.5 mm audio jack and the power on/off buttons are placed on the top of the device. Interestingly, the micro-USB port is also located on the top. This is a sign showing you will not find any ports on the sides of the handset, well, except for the camera and the volume up/down button (which seem to be smaller than those on Nokia’s previous models). This is not that great if we consider the lock button is on the top, so you need to stretch for unlocking the handset every other time. The inconvenience is basically caused by the “not that small dimensions” of the handset. Still this fact is pretty awesome for those in love with special protective cases, as they will not have that many cuts, protecting the smartphone in the best way possible.

And the final interesting feature of the handset is its thickness. The device is only 8.11 mm thick. So it’s one of Nokia’s slimmest handsets.

The only component missing on this device is the Eco-friendliness. If on the Nokia 701 the manufacturer used materials, which can be safely recycled, then this is not the case with the Nokia Lumia 710.

Overall, the design of the handset is pretty attractive. It will definitely attract the attention of the young segment of customers. While I think it can look good in the portfolio of businessmen and business ladies as well.

Virgin Mobile France to Offer Nokia Lumia 800

by Argam - on Nov 18th 2011 - No Comments

Nokia’s first smartphone running Microsoft’s newly launched Windows Phone Mango is already available in several European countries like the UK and Germany. So it’s France’s turn and we have some gladsome news for French consumers. Virgin Mobile France has announced via its Twitter account that the Nokia Lumia 800 will be available in the country not earlier than January. Of course, that’s a bit disappointing, because I guess many users have been dreaming of having the phone by Christmas time.

I understand what made you upset, as I myself am deeply in love with the Nokia Lumia 800 because of its features.

The Nokia Lumia 800 specs list

  • 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen
  • 16GB storage, 512MB of RAM
  • 8MP rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and dual-LED flash
  • 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor
  • Standard 1450mAh battery providing up to 9.5 hours of talk time.

Unfortunately, we don’t know at what price tag the phone will come, but European mobile operators always make affordable offers, so we hope this time again we’ll see the same. Moreover, we are positively surprised at what Nokia, Microsoft and operators are doing currently, that’s why the Nokia Lumia 800 shows record numbers of pre-orders.

Nokia Removes Mysterious WP Device From Promo Video

by Argam - on Nov 18th 2011 - No Comments

Yesterday we talked about a video published in Nokia’s Developers official YouTube Channel, which included an unannounced WP device. Today the video is no longer accessible. It’s marked as private, while the promo video has been edited and now it doesn’t contain the novelty. The device, which was rumored to be the Nokia Ace, is now replaced with a stable render of the Nokia Lumia 800, which doesn’t arouse any interest.

This action leads to various questions. There are basically two possible explanations. According to the first one, Nokia used a graphically made non-realistic device, so that the users of current and upcoming WP Mango devices don’t feel ignored. Well, this sounds pretty versatile. If this was the aim, Nokia could just have the text applicable to all WP Mango handsets. In this case the video edit can be explained by the fact the manufacturer decided to avoid rumors whether the device is an actual one or not. Not a smart solution, right?

The second explanation is reasoned by the fact it’s really a novelty, but the manufacturer has decided to keep silent until the official announcement. In this regard, I guess this video was just a way to cause more interest towards the novelty. If this is the case, then Nokia should launch the device sometime soon, until the interest is really at its top.

Nokia is back. The proof is the Nokia Lumia 800, which managed to gain the love of many geeks, even though it’s not launched yet. We’ve talked about the phone for many times and each time reminded you that it’s the same Nokia N9 with Windows Phone Mango inside. Now that the launch date of the phone is coming closer, let’s see what we have.

Before you push the play button and watch the video, get acquainted with the specs list of the Nokia Lumia 800, because that’s what the designers have to think about when devising a handset. The Lumia 800 sports a 3.7-inch AMOLED True Black screen, 1.4 GHz Snapdragon CPU (32bit), 512MB of RAM that ensures smooth performance, 16GB of internal memory, an 8.8MP camera with a dual-LED flash and Carl Zeiss lens, a 1450mAh battery, Bluetooth, WLAN, GPS, FM radio, accelerometer and so on. As for network bands, it supports GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS850, UMTS900, UMTS1900, UMTS2100, CSD, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+, though we have heard AT&T will bring the LTE version of the device to the States.

Nokia Lumia 800: Top 5 Features

by Argam - on Nov 10th 2011 - 1 Comment

I believe in the Nokia Lumia 800. Geeks will definitely love it. In short, I believe Nokia’s back. Now let’s have a look at the newly-announced Lumia 800 and discuss the features, which can ensure the phone’s success.

For this deal we decided to turn to our friends at Nokiaconnects, and now we have what we needed. Below is the list of top 5 Nokia Lumia 800 features.

5. Nokia Music — Nokia Music is Nokia’s version of what Apple called iTunes and Google called Google Music. This is a radio-based Mix Radio service that allows users to choose the one they want to listen to. One of its advantages is it doesn’t require registration. But as for the service itself, each channel offers 50 tracks, which are refreshed every week. Plus, when out of coverage the app will cache 200 songs on your device or 4 channels providing two hours of non-stop playback.

4. Homescreen — Homescreen’s Microsoft’s honor, and not that of Nokia’s. But it doesn’t make it less welcomed. We like what we see when taking out and looking at the phone. The new look of live tiles and Windows Phone Mango overall is just awesome.

3. Xbox Live — The Nokia Lumia 800 comes with Xbox Live feature, which allows users to view and edit their profile, check and reply to messages, download games, check their achievements, change their avatar and lots of other actions.

2. Design – We’ve talked about its look for several times, and every time the conversation gains new momentum, because the Nokia Lumia 800 comes in the same design as the MeeGo-powered Nokia N9, but Windows Phone Mango gives another look to it. I heard various opinions concerning its design, and most of them were positive. Even iPhone and Android fans agreed the Lumia 800 has a great appearance.

1. Of course, the first place is reserved for Nokia Lumia 800′s social integration. This is what we call “genius.” You can always get information about your contacts, but besides the basic one, ther’s a deep integration with social networking sites. So every time you open your people hub on the phone, you have a chance to know everything about your contacts.

Nokia Lumia 800 to be Launched in UK on November 16

by Argam - on Nov 2nd 2011 - No Comments

The Nokia Lumia 800 is the company’s first smartphone to run Windows Phone Mango. It was announced at Nokia World 2011 on October 26 along with the Nokia Lumia 710. Nokia said the unlocked version of the Lumia 800 will cost €420 (₤359 or $570). As for the phone’s availability, on November 16 it’ll be launched in the UK.

Several UK carriers have already announced they are ready to stock the device, so the phone will be offered at an affordable price and data plans. The mentioned date is coming closer and I suggest that we recall the features that adorn the Nokia Lumia 800.

The Nokia Lumia 800 specs list

  • 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen
  • 16GB of internal memory
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 8MP camera with autofocus, Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash
  • 1.4GHz single-core processor with 3D Graphics HW Accelerator
  • Li-Ion 1450mAh battery providing up to 9.5 hours of talk time in 3G
  • Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS

Well, the phone is good, this can’t be denied, and if Nokia chooses an acceptable price policy, everything will be OK, regardless of the fact that Android fans don’t recognize another “god.”

Nokia Ace Leaked Again?

by Argam - on Nov 1st 2011 - 1 Comment

The Design Museum of Shad, Thames demonstrated 3 Nokia  devices. The list includes the Nokia Lumia 800, the Nokia N9 and an unknown device. The handset comes with a large and thin display, which is a hint of Windows Phone. The analysts claim this is the Nokia Ace, which was rumored earlier, but never actually faced a release.  We expected to see the device at Nokia World 2011, but the hope is not all gone. We assume the device will be unveiled in Q1 of 2012.

It’s very much possible that what we see is simply a render from Nokia and not a real device. But we will never know unless we hear a word from Nokia representatives.

So what is the Nokia Ace? It’s rumored to be a 4.3 inch AMOLED display device coming with ClearBlack technology, 1 GHz processor, an 8 megapixel rear camera with video capturing capabilities (as usual we don’t have a front-facing camera for a WP device), 16 GB of internal storage, HSPA+ connectivity and Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS.

The Nokia Ace is expected to get released by AT&T at the beginning of next year. There’s no feedback from the carrier itself.

Kik Messenger for Symbian and Windows Phone Mango

by Argam - on Oct 27th 2011 - 1 Comment

Kik launched a new app for Symbian and Windows Phone devices at Nokia World 2011 event. The application is designed for cross-platform messaging. It comes in private beta version for Symbian devices and is now updated to work with the latest version of WP, that is Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. For WP Mango we have 2.0 version of the application.

This application has been already available for iOS, Android and Blackberry operating systems. So we can say at the moment Kik Messenger is also available for all major operating system based handsets.

The Symbian private beta version of the application allows to send and read notifications, to have a group chat with any Kik user (regardless of the OS used by the group member) and to share photos.

As for the Windows Phone 2.0 version of the app, we have fast app switching, list scrolling, address book contact matching and many other innovations.

The latest three devices of Nokia — the Nokia Asha 200, Asha 300 and 303 — are all running What’sApp application, while Kik Messenger is way faster and will most likely be used for Nokia’s upcoming high-end devices.

Nokia World 2011

by Argam - on Oct 26th 2011 - No Comments

Finally Nokia World took place and we saw what we had been waiting for. It firstly refers to the Nokia Lumia 800, the first Nokia Windows Phone smartphone. Of course, there were other products as well, but let’s talk about everything in order.

The Nokia Lumia is what we have called the Nokia 800 and though many analysts hurried to think it’s the same SeaRay or Sun, now we see this is an absolutely different device. The rumors the Nokia 800 will sport a 3.7-inch display turned out to be rumors and only. I had previously told you that they are destined to be only rumors. So the reality is different; the Nokia Lumia 800 comes in the same housing as the Nokia N9 does, which means the phone is packed with a 3.9-inch (!) display.

Moreover, the phone’s screen has a resolution of 854×480 pixels and is made using ClearBlack AMOLED technology. All in all, the Nokia Lumia 800 is the same Nokia N9 with Windows Phone Mango on the board, so at this moment let’s not mention all its specs, because you always can check out our Nokia N9 preview. Several features worth to be persistently mentioned are 1.4 GHz CPU, 16GB of internal memory, 25GB of free SkyDrive space, Carl Zeiss optics-enhanced lens and f/2.2 aperture.

As for availability, the Nokia Lumia 800 is ready for pre-orders for €420 (about $585). The first countries to meet this phone are France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. Consumers from these countries can get their hands on the phone from the beginning of November. The second patch will be shipped to Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the end of the year. Other parts of the world will get it sometime next year.

Nokia also announced the Lumia 710. The device looks weaker and is designed for low-income markets. This is why it’s packed with a 3.7-inch ClearBlack display, a 1.4GHz CPU and runs Windows Phone Mango. The Nokia Lumia 710 is priced at €270 ($375). By the end of the year it’ll be available in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan. Other countries will get the device in the first half of 2012.

Nokia also unveiled a new lineup called Asha. These devices will run Series 40. As you see they are designed as low-end smartphones. Today we saw four handsets from the Asha lineup, the 200, 201, 300 and 301. They are all made “to connect the next billion.” We’ll talk about them in details later; at this moment you only need to know they are quite cheap.

And lastly, Nokia announced Drive Navigation, Mix Radio, and ESPN Sports Hub cloud services for WP7. As for accessories, the Finnish company introduced the Purity HD Stereo Headset by Monster.
